DARLINGTON – Stephen Markley Smith, 76, died Sunday evening in Culver Hospital following a short illness. Mr. Smith was a retired farmer. He was born Sept. 27, 1900, at Richmond, to John Harvey and Lydia Jane Reed Smith. He was married to Marie E. LaFollette at Danville, Ill., Feb. 24, 1932. She survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Barbara LaFollette and Mrs. Ed (Jane) Vannice both of Crawfordsville; two sons, James Robert of Garfield and John Richard of Darlington; three sisters, Mrs. Edith Warren of Linden, Mrs. Henry (Bonnie) Hartung of Crawfordsville and Mrs. Mildred Linn of Washington, D.C.; a brother, Everett L. Smith of Advance; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Grover, William K. and Herman. Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in Burkhart Funeral Home, Darlington Chapel. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Tuesday. – jlr
